University of Illinois, Krannert Art Museum

Publication

Krannert Art Museum is the second-largest art museum in Illinois serving 132,000 community members, students, and faculty a year on the campus of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. We first began working with Krannert on exhibition publications. The relationship grew to include brand identity and on-going marketing communications.

Selected WorksExhibition catalogues designed and produced for Krannert are varied in tone to reflect each exhibition's content, while maintaining a consistent spirit of invention and exploration reflective of the museum's mission.

A handbook of the Krannert's permanent collection introduced the new mark. This handbook binds multiple stories together – entries and plates documenting collection highlights and secondary booklets narrating the museum's mission and history. The handbook serves as collection guide, development tool, and design artifact.

The Strange Life of Objects: The Art of Annette LemieuxArtist Annette Lemieux merges minimalist conceptual art with appropriated cultural references. For this catalogue, accompanying a mid-career retrospective of her work, we designed a stripped down compendium with varied typefaces and paper stocks reflecting a range of cultural influences, and a binding reminiscent of the old Baedekers guidebooks she collects.

Under ControlOur catalogue for Under Control, an exhibition about overt and covert forms of control in contemporary culture, references the ennui and secretive nature of government documents with its computer-keyboard typography, carbon-copy blue ink, and thin legalese paper stock.
